Exchange Student Programs

Program Overview

This program involves exchanging undergraduate or graduate students between GNU and foreign universities that have signed the agreement on academic exchanges. Credits earned at a foreign university during a certain study period can be transferred to GNU, and exchange students can broaden their horizons on internationalization through their direct exposure to advanced learning and foreign cultures.

Benefits for Exchange Students

Affordable Costs

  • Under the agreement reached between the two universities, exchange students pay their tuition to GNU without any additional costs paid to the university to which they are dispatched.

Credit transfer

  • In accordance with the rules governing the transfer of credits earned at other universities, exchange students can transfer those credits to GNU. (Up to 35 credits are transferable annually.)

Various experiences

  • Living with foreigners overseas enables the students not only to acquire the language of the country, but also to provide them with the breadth of thinking and experiences that cannot be gained at home.

Advance Preparation for Studying Abroad

  • Studying as exchange students can provide those preparing for a degree course with opportunities to gather related material for full scale studying abroad and to adjust to living in a foreign environment.

Procedure for Credit Transfer

Receiving transcript->Approving credits->Submission->Inputting credits
  1. The official transcript acquired at the university to which a student was dispatched is forwarded to GNU.
  2. Credits acquired by an exchange student are approved by professors of the relevant departments and transferred into the categories of majors, liberal arts, and electives in the same way as those credits earned at GNU.
  3. Each department shall input the approved courses in the approval form for credits earned from other universities and submit them to the Academic Affairs Section.
  4. The Academic Affairs Section inputs credits by individual student.

Tuition and Expenses

  • GNU’s tuition shall be paid for the period of a dispatch, but tuition fees to the other university are waived.
  • Airfare, health insurance premium, and other expenses shall be borne by the dispatched student.
  • JASSO scholarship (applied only to exchange students to Japan): 80,000 yen/month, 150,000 yen for settlement in Japan (one time).
